Apologies for asking two questions in one night. This is one that I’ve been meaning to ask and keep forgetting. Is there a particular reason everyone seems to hate taking five minutes to fill up their tanks? It’s like the Jetsons with how the kids complained about chores even though it was only a push button to have it done rebotically. Heaven forbid having to fill up multiple times in the same week.
Contrasted with the attitudes towards charging, whether phone or car, pumping gas has the same attitude as taking out the trash or placing a new bag in the bin (because everyone I know puts off one or the other).

Nothing better than a few moments of peace at night time when noones around, just filling up at the side of the road. During the day? Meh.

Because when it is cold you have to stand next to your car freezing your ass off while you fill it up.

1) gas grifters en masse
2) poor etiquette by other patrons
3) only several of the card readers seem to work at a time
4) they’re always out of the one drink you want inside the store

It’s annoying when you’re in a rush, even worse when you have to find one in a unfamiliar area.
In some cities, it seems like they’re only allowed to have gas stations on one street :/

Because it costs time
and time is the only thing we can’t have more of

I live in NJ and drive 120 miles/workday. I really don’t care about having to stop for gas. Not having to get out of the car for gas when its windy and cold as balls is the greatest thing ever.

actually filling up, I have no issue.
I do want range b/c I end up in the middle of bum-fuck-nowhere and dont want to be hunting for gas

For one thing it costs money. Another is it takes up time on the commute you may only have allocated a set time for.
Now I’m not running a by the minute schedule, but I’ll get out the door later than expected sometimes, so the extra 5-8 minutes adds to the commute.
On the money side of it, it’s gotta be done so putting it off until the fuel light comes on is standard for some folks.
QuikTrip has a card they give out that links to your drivers license (we’ll just has your info on it) so you can pay inside. Basicly get the pump turned on, then buy what else you want from in the store.

Because it costs too much. Here in Canada it’s about 4-5 usd a gallon

One reason I hate it is the panhandlers, and scammers. I try to get mine early in the morning when they aren’t awake yet.

We humans can find a way to hate anything.

my guess is...
when youre in your car, you have basically one purpose: to go somewhere.
stopping for gas (stopping for anything) is the literal opposite of the purpose youre in that car.
our consciousness doesnt appreciate the dissonance.

Beats me. I paid $1.62 for gas at Costco the other day and was pretty happy about it.

Damn bad hombres have stolen my gas cap before. I really do wish I could pump my own gas. It’s such an obscure task to have someone else do and wastes time.
![]() 11/19/2016 at 21:31 |

My gas cap is tethered to the car. I am more worried about them putting regular into my car when it needs 93. It runs like shit on regular.

Why don’t you just put on the trigger latch and get back in the car?!

People who don’t work for a living get to sleep in.

Illegal. Even in states where you can use the latch you still have to be watching it where you can intervene if something were to happen.

I don’t have a problem with stopping to fill my tank, although it was a PITA when my truck took more than $100 to fill and the pumps would turn off at $75 or $100. Plugging my car in every night is easy, quick and doesn’t require an immediate payment. There is a certain novelty to it besides the efficiency and economy.

Ive never had that screwed up yet but I do worry about that. It’s not like they can take the gas back if they put the wrong one in. I don’t have much power as is, I can’t imagine how slow 87 is.

1) I hate waiting for a pump only to have some moron try to squish into the spot
2) pan handlers
3) “charity” groups selling very, very expensive cleaning products
4) youth trying to decide what type of cigarette is the coolest when I just want to pay for my gas
*** 5) extra bonus for when I am down in Oregon - I hate having to let other people pump my gas
![]() 11/19/2016 at 22:00 |

I just hate having to do it so often

Yeah, they don’t touch my car. I open the fuel door and insert the nozzle. The pump under my supervision while I’m next to them. I then remove the nozzle and close the fuel door.
I had a fuel door get messed up by a NJ has attendant years ago. Never again. I explain this when I have to gas up in NJ to the attendant s. Never had a problem.

Man what commununist dystopia do you live in? Here we all just click the latch and go into the convenience store buy snacks and lottery tickets and come out to a full tank and nobody cares. Heck, even the cops click the latch while filling their cruisers and coming me in for donuts and....Wait there are states without the latch?! I’ve seen pumps without them, but I just figured it was a case-by-case basis. Anyway in those cases I just shove the gas cap under the trigger as a makeshift latch. Works great except sometimes falls to the ground when the pump clicks off.

I have a theory! It’s because you aren’t getting a tangible item. People like to brag about stuff that they buy (my 50" TV is better than yours!). You really can’t do that with Gas. We are obsessed with stuff and how our stuff is better than someone elses stuff. Even a phone bill gets shown off. “My plan is $xxx per month with Sprivericell Mobile” blablabla..
If you show off how much Gas you buy or what brand it is like that? You’re looked at as a bit of an oddball. You may even win a Psych evaluation.

Is states where it is illegal for your average person to use the latch the pumps are typically not fitted with the latch. MA used to be one of these states though it recently became legal to use the latch. 90% of stations haven’t been updated with the new handles though.

I never used to mind it as there was always some time where I had to pass a station, but I got a new job recently and have to stop several times a week now. I hate it because I have to go out of my way, and I just want to be home after a long day and long drive through traffic. If there was a station on my way or my commute wasn’t so frustrating, getting gas wouldn’t bother me.

Agreed, I find it quite peaceful to fill up late at night, when there’s few people around.

Gas? What is this gas that you speak of?

I don’t mind filling up but then again, once I get to a quarter tank, I keep in mind that it’s time. There will definitely be a trip in the next 80 or so miles where I have an extra five minutes to fill up. So I am never in the situation where I “have to stop for gas” before we can get underway.
Also, my truck gets 400 miles to the tank, I mostly commute by bicycle, and my commute is only 14 miles anyway. Oh, and I have a fun time car and motorcycle so I really don’t fill up too frequently. Now that I think about it, many of my fill ups are because I’m going on a road trip, and the gas I have left over from the trip lasts me until the next road trip haha.
